A browser cannot see its own public address. The only address it knows locally is the private
one your router handed out — usually something starting 192.168. To learn the
public one, something outside your network has to report what address the request came from,
so this page asks our server and shows you the answer.
That means your address is sent to us. It is not logged or stored.
The internet is made of about 75,000 independently run networks, called autonomous systems.
Each has a permanent number, like AS24757, and announces which addresses it is
responsible for.
Yours is normally your internet provider. On a VPN you will see the VPN company instead, and on a cloud server you will see Amazon or Hetzner — which is how this page guesses whether a connection is a home line or a datacenter.
A network, not a person. Everyone in your house shares one public address, and your router works out which device asked for what. On mobile networks thousands of people can share a single address.
IPv4 addresses look like 203.0.113.42, and the world ran out of them years ago.
IPv6 addresses look like 2001:db8::8a2e:370:7334, and there are effectively
unlimited numbers of them. Most connections now have both, and browsers prefer IPv6 when it
is available.
Most home connections get a new address periodically, or whenever the router restarts. That is normal. A fixed address is usually a paid extra, and only matters if you are hosting something others need to reach.
Country is usually right. Anything finer is not: city-level guesses often point at wherever your provider routes traffic, which can be hundreds of kilometres away.
With a VPN on, this page should show the VPN's address, not yours. If it still shows your own, the tunnel is not carrying your traffic.
